Diversity on Campus
We are committed to promoting a community of scholars. As such, Missouri S&T draws students not only from every county in the state of Missouri, but from all fifty states in America. It is just as likely to have a lab partner from California, Alaska or Texas as it is to have a roommate from Kansas City or Chicago.
Women make up nearly one-third of our undergraduate student body – one of the highest female populations in the nation for a technological university. In the past 20 years, the number of women on campus has skyrocketed as society finally began to see that math, science and technology isn’t “just for boys” anymore. Top female professors like Dr. Mariesa Crow, head of Missouri S&T’s Energy Research and Development Center, challenge young women with a passion for math and science to be pioneers in their professions.

The Women’s Leadership Institute offers leadership projects and sponsors a special learning community to help young women network and reach their full potential. Cecilia Elmore, herself a Miner alumna, former student-athlete and a licensed professional engineer, serves as both mentor and role model for the WLI and the Women in Science and Engineering program.
The Missouri S&T community encompasses students from all ethnic backgrounds, and ten percent of our student body represent minority communities. Additionally, international students from sixty-five countries around the globe call Rolla home. For more than thirty years, Missouri S&T’s prestigious Minority Engineering Program has supported African American, Native American and Hispanic students as they pursue degrees in science and technology. Through academic support, career exploration and counseling, mentoring and social activities, the Student Diversity Program's staff helps bridge the gap from high school to career.
