Pre-Professional Programs

Pre-professional programs at Missouri S&T are designed to prepare students for post-graduate professional schools in nursing, law, dentistry, medicine and other fields. Many professional programs require a bachelor's degree as a prerequisite for admission for post-graduate work. Missouri S&T students perform above average among students making application to professional schools and have a high success rate in gaining acceptance to professional programs.

Pre-Health Professions Professional Programs
(pre-medicine, pre-dental, pre-veterinary)

Missouri S&T students have been very successful in gaining admission to medical, veterinary and dental schools. A pre-health professions program does not require a specific major. It does require considerable coursework in chemistry, biology, anatomy, biochemistry, physiology and one year of physics is highly recommended.

Missouri S&T pre-med students have the option of participating in the Bryant Scholars Program, a guaranteed admission program at the University of Missouri-Columbia's School of Medicine. Bryant Scholars is designed to encourage young people from rural areas to pursue a medical education and return to practice in rural Missouri. [more info]

Most pre-health professions students at Missouri S&T pursue a degrees in:

A pre-health professions student is urged to consider elective courses in computer science, economics, English, fine arts, foreign languages, history, philosophy, psychology, sociology and other disciplines which will add breadth to the student's preparation and professional school application.

Pre-nursing Professional Program

Students interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) may take two to three semesters of pre-nursing coursework at Missouri S&T. Most BSN programs require courses in biology, chemistry, English, history, humanities, mathematics and social sciences. Missouri S&T offers these courses. Academic advisors will assist students in the selection of coursework and ultimately the nursing schools two which they will apply. Some Missouri S&T coursework also may apply to specific associates degree program.

Pre-law Professional Program

The first requirement for law school admission is to earn a bachelor's degree. Law schools admit students from a wide variety of programs of study. While history and political science have been the traditional route to law, today's law school students come from a wide variety of academic backgrounds. Pre-law majors in engineering, science and technological fields provide unique backgrounds for special litigation in patent law, or the problems of product liability and government regulations.

Missouri S&T pre-law students pursue varied degrees across all disciplines, depending on their intended legal specialty or area of interest:

A successful pre-law program requires course planning to include fundamentals that are essential for legal training, such as accounting, logic, language skills and a general understanding of the concepts of psychology, sociology, and economics. Any student planning to apply to law school should expect to show above-average academic ability. Pre-law advising at Missouri S&T involves information about courses/curricula, law school admissions, the LSAT (Law School Admissions Test) and national entrance procedures.
